This is the RATATAT Project Deliverables Page

The Ratatat project deliverables as outlined in the project plan are as follows:

1. A full technical specification of the remote desktop access and personalised online learning environment support system;

2. Four case studies detailing the application and evaluation of remote access to high level practical skills development at Masters Degree level;

3. A project report that includes an assessment of the quality assurance and validation requirements that would allow practical work to be carried out remotely.

1. Remote Desktop Access and the Online Learning Environment

The development of systems for remote desktop access to the computers in the SMU NDT Laboratory have been described in the specific Work-in-Progress pages on this website.

Remote access was provided by setting up a VPN link to the SMU network and then a logon script for the specific computer to be accessed. In order to allow internet access at the same time as VPN connectivity, conflicts in the communications settings needed to be resolved. Guidance notes on this procedure were also produced. The documents relevant to the technical specification are:

VPN Setup Instructions

VPN/Internet Connection Procedures

Remote Logon Script example

The Online Learning Environment development process is documented in the Online Learning Environment and Experimental pages. These show how the process of testing and evaluation led to the use of Google Sites as the Web 2.0 application on which to base the environment. They also detail experiments with different types of functionality, including communications, document and resource management tools and personalisation options.

The final version of the online learning environment can be seen below:

2. Case Studies

The four case studies relate to four different experimental procedures that were being prepared and tested for remote access. All the working documents can be found in the Online Practical Exercises page and the case studies will be based on the experimental guidance notes and the subsequent implementation reports for each of the four experiments. The key documents are:

Photoelastic Stress Experiment

Photoelastic Stress Laboratory Experiment Guidance

Photoelastic Stress Laboratory Experiment Report

Thermography Experiment

Thermography Laboratory Experiment Guidance

Thermography Laboratory Experiment Report

Laser Vibrometer Laboratory Experiment

{to be added}

Ultrasound Laboratory Experiment

{to be added}

3. Project Report

{to be added}
