This page documents the various research and development activities carried out as part of the Ratatat Project. The intention is to maintain an online library of resources and provide a comentary on the software, widgets and other types of functionality employed in the project learning environment.

WebCams

August 2009: a number of webcams are planned for use in the NDT Lab at Swansea Met. At present, the setting up of PCs as webcam servers and testing open source/free software is being carried out using a small home network of PCs/laprops using Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcams. The webcam feeds are being displayed on the webcam page in the Communications Zone of the Ratatat Learning Environment.

The webcam software being tested is webcamXP which offers a free single webcam source version and a multiple source version for a modest cost. It is simple to download and setup and can be easily embedded in web pages and wikis. The software is well documented and the website is at: http://www.webcamxp.com/home.aspx.

On the downside, the embedded video windows need to be scrolled to centre the feed (although this may be solved by suitable tweaking of the embed code) and the streaming sometimes freezes (though this may also be something that can be simply avoided in setup).

Remote VPN Access

September 2009: VPN access has now been set up for the first of the four NDT experiments and has been successfully tested remotely. A report on the exercise is now available:

Remote Desktop Access Test 1.doc

The guide to setting up the VPN connection is also available: Vpn Setup Instructions.doc, as is the RDP file that automatically takes the student to the NDT computer once the VPN connection is established: Log on to NDT02 PC.RDP.

The NDT data capture and analysis software is then available to the student with full functionality:

November 2009:  Modified Remote Desktop Access script has been uploaded.  This, along with the modification to the host computers group policy overcomes the original 16bit graphics limitation previously encountered.

Log on to NDT02 PC 24bit.RDP

An ammended report of the current status of the remote access experiments has also been uploaded.

Remote NDT Experiment Development.docx

4th January 2010:  The Polytec Laser Doppler Vibrometer System is now networked and remote desktop ready. All experimental Links and documents available on the Online Practical Exercises Page.

The conflict between VPN connectivity and the ability to access the Internet at the same time has been resolved, The following document outlines the setup procedure:

VPN connection procedures.doc
